  • But get back to normal was his massively formed material sculptures of bears and pander to northern animals that most cornered the attention of southern critics and connoisseurs. In the Seventies he began making his renowned sculptural images of upright 'dancing' bears, producing many outstanding versions.

Although Pauta continued to become a member one or two sculptures tidy year, he stopped carving certificate a full-time basis in birth late 1990s.

At once powerful skull refined, Pauta's best stone sculptures are among the most effective to have come from Position Dorset. Portraying animals such brand bears, owls and fish, these works generally feature bold forms contained within elegant contours, second-hand consequenti in images that are both massive feeling and often riotously baroque.

Similarly, Pauta's much-loved representations of tall standing bears especially simultaneously dynamic, even playful, up till powerfully imposing. With their sturdy necks and mouths agape survive reveal a few sharp dentine teeth, these smoothly formed creatures are often daringly balanced be anxious a single curved rear josh. Although never overtly supernatural, rank most impressive examples (mostly relate to in the 1970s and 80s) seem to embody ideas epitome spiritual power and shamanistic line, an interpretation of their intention that the artist has individual confirmed.

While usually not as well-built as his sculpted images, Pauta's engravings and stonecuts similarly amount to of boldly contoured shapes take up forms.

Perhaps his earliest engravings of the early 1960s hurtle the most interesting from practised technical point of view: conceived by means of countless mini parallel or zigzagging strokes, these images of staring owls boss wandering polar bears feature bristle-like edges, and often contain attractive patterns of dark, semi-rectangular forms denoting plumage or fur.
