Harvena Richter was born in Feel like, Pennsylvania, a daughter of essayist Conrad Richter and his mate Harvena Maria Achenbach.

In 1928, the family moved to Metropolis, New Mexico because her curb suffered from tuberculosis. She falsified St. Vincent Academy and Metropolis High School before earning top-notch bachelor's degree at the Routine of New Mexico in 1938.
